Change is Good (sometimes)
I have always considered myself to be a flexible kind of gal. You know, one that roles with the punches. Every once in awhile, when we are overstaffed at work and there is another sister unit that is understaffed, we get to float to that unit to help out. The team leaders keep a list of when that last time that you are floated so when the need arises and your turn comes up, you go. Different times throughout the day, the thought kept coming into my mind that my time was up. I was trying to remember all the little things that are done in the other unit, things that I have to do as an RN and stuff that the PCA does that I do not have to worry about doing myself. On the way to work, I was starting to get nervous about where I was going to be. I put my lunch away went to check on the assignment board to see who I was going to be taking care of and my name was not where it should be, but sure as the sun shines, there was my name: Susan G-3BW, peds!!! It was a good thing that I got myself all psyched up to floating--it is a small unit. The charge nurse is a very nice person--he is also married to a philippina. Everyone was very helpful. I had nice parents and good babies that didn't cause any problems for me. All in all, it was a good night for me. Change is good--at least in this particular case.
